Un-Friending Facebook
I am un-friending Facebook. Deleting it in a way, perhaps.
I'm tired of missing out on life, conversation and the simple things I used to enjoy so much. Sure, you think I could have both... fiddling with my cell phone, making snarking comments on the walls of my friends, but in reality, wouldn't you rather have a cup of coffee with said friend?
Pick up the phone and CALL THEM! Right now.
I have found that our 'social network' is nothing more than an anti-social network. Created by lab-rats who spent their days with their heads buried in computers, they have figured out a way to do the same to us. Sounds harsh, but it is true. While the rest of the world was out enjoying life, there were a few who found coding on a computer screen much more satisfying. Fast forward ten years and now, at every coffee house or wi-fi hotspot, you will find no less than six or seven people missing out on life because they have their faces buried in Facebook.
We are all turning into Facebook Zombies.
When I was overseas, I checked Facebook when I found a wifi location. I found that although it was nice to be able to still see what everyone back home was doing, Skype was actually more valuable because I could TALK to those same people.
I miss being overseas, I miss being away from it all, I miss the simplicity where there was no 'smartphone', no 'facebook', no complete and utter worship of the hand held device.
Dear Facebook,
I've thought about this long and hard, and it is official. I am breaking up with you
I have deleted all of my pictures, status updates, wall postings, etc etc etc off of my Facebook account. and instead posted the following:
"Notice is hereby given that all citizens must everywhere, everyday constantly fiddle with their cell phones. At no time is it permissible to sit idle and observe the poetry of life or look into the eyes of another person. urthermore, the arrival of a snippit of trivial text holds the promise of unimagined pleasure. Honor they ringtone and jiggling hand-held device above all other gods. Remember always: practice constant devotion to the precious object, give full attention to the glorious technology, and maintain unselfish love for the flimsy hardware."
This time. It is for real.
