Anti-social networking and the art of lost conversation
Recently, over breakfast with my traveling companions, I found myself staring blankly at the plate of fluffy yellow scrambled eggs desperate for a thought provoking, engaging conversation. Instead, I find myself at a table with two people totally engrossed in their laptops.
The nuevo-version of a conversation over breakfast turned into quick quips posted on Facebook, updating blogs, and other anti-'social networking'.
What a crock.
Over the last five years, I have observed our 'socialness' the part of us that makes us human, the communication that takes us above that of the Apes, is turning into this 'screen social'. Yes.... the way to 'talk' to my traveling companions was to pick up the iphone sitting in front of me, log on to my facebook account and message them something quick and clever.
It's fucking ridiculous.
When I point it out to my beloved traveling companions, they both put their computers away and we have a conversation... (about Facebook, online poker, blogging, etc).... *siiiigh*
Ok, so maybe I am exaggerating a bit about what happened at breakfast, but it doesn't make the point less valid.
Even Burningman has gone tech.
I shouldn't be surprised, considering I have traveled through some of the poorest countries in the world and not once have I lacked a wi-fi connection (a decent wi-fi connection is another story, but wi-fi none-the-less).
What has this world come to?
